Star Apartments La Biennale De Venezia 2018
Star Apartments was presented at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, reflecting the FREESPACE theme focused on generosity and humanity in architecture. MMA showcased Star Apartments, a supportive housing project in downtown Los Angeles for 102 formerly homeless individuals, designed to encourage recovery and dignity for residents. The exhibition highlighted the project at three scales; The City - An isometric mural and aerial footage positioned the building within Los Angeles's vast urban context, with video showing activity along the street; Community - A detailed architectural model and drawings depicted the building’s organization, emphasizing the community floor featuring shared spaces like a kitchen, gardens, and a sports court; The Individual - Diorama models, large-scale photos of personal belongings, and resident interviews illustrated how each apartment allows for personalized space and diversity among residents. Nefer Fernandez, as a designer and fabricator, was part of the Michael Maltzan Architecture team that executed the design and fabrication.
